Interpretation- The Arrival
I had recieved a very superficial reading of the text on the first reading, i had been caught but the hyper-realistic form of charcoal drawings and felt that they worked in humanizing the characters in the piece via the close attention to detail in the facial expressions of the characters in the story. I had felt that it was an explorers tale, delving into the life of a man that had left his own home and way of life for a new adventure, filled with the vibrancy and an alien way of life and civilization structure. The disconnect of the new environment appears to off-put the main character, and as he navigates the new work he encounters others and begins to learn how they arrived at this far away land as well.
To be fair, my interpretation was not quite up to par with the realization in class that the main character is an immigrant, symbolized by the delving into an "alien" world. With this in mind this changes my perspective on the story, pushing me to feel more into the hardships of life and the complicated chain of events that lead the combination of characters witnessed to end up in this newfound place. Someone immigrating from Tai-wan to the united states would feel a similar culture shock as customary traditions, holidays, and wildlife have a tendency to vary by region. In the piece, i feel that the highly detail of the human form helps to create the sense of mood and tone in the story, giving highly descriptive facial drawings helps to further the ability of the average person's ability to read emotion and body language. Without any text, the use of the body language and emotion via facial expressions helps to convey the emotion in the piece.
